South Africa: Networking helped Tamia find her voice and inspire others beyond sanitary dignity

Tamia Moses, a young ambassador from Bloemfontein, transformed from a shy young woman into a confident leader through support from the MT Foundation. Her journey shows how mentorship, safe spaces, and networking can empower young women to speak up, advocate for menstrual health, and inspire others in their communities.

Tamia Moses grew up in Heidedal, a township in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Although she worked as a runway model, she often avoided the spotlight and stayed in the background, unsure of how to express her ideas. Her journey began with the MT Foundation’s Free The Period initiative, where she served as an ambassador and used her modelling and social media influence to share messages about menstrual health, gender equality, and empowerment.

Through workshops, networking events, and support from mentors, Tamia slowly developed the confidence to step forward. She attended events and panel discussions where she connected with other ambassadors and community leaders. Social media became a key platform for her advocacy, allowing her to reach wider audiences and promote the Foundation’s work.

Her transformation became clear in 2025, particularly during the Partnerships and Collaborations Day, where she spoke publicly about how networking had changed her life. This shift extended to her digital presence, where she began sharing messages that encouraged young women to speak openly about menstrual health and gender equality.

The significance of this change goes beyond Tamia herself. Her confidence inspires girls in her community to believe in their potential. She has become a relatable role model whose voice helps reduce stigma, motivate youth, and encourage reporting of gender‑based violence. Her growth aligns closely with the MT Foundation’s mission: empowering young women through leadership, advocacy, and supportive networks.

Sustaining this change will involve continued mentorship and her ongoing role as a Free The Period Ambassador. The Foundation plans to expand its programme to support 30 new ambassadors, using Tamia’s story as inspiration. By strengthening partnerships with schools, communities, and national campaigns, the Foundation aims to scale the impact of voices like Tamia’s and build a wider movement of confident, empowered leaders.
