Zimbabwe: From Desperation to success

"My life took a dramatic turn in November 2022 when I was selected for the Promoting Gender Inclusive Local Economic Development in Zimbabwe programme," Kashesha recalls. The programme, implemented by Gender Links with financial support from the Embassy of Sweden in Zimbabwe, consisted of 10 visits that opened his eyes to a new future. "The training on Life Skills and Entrepreneurship was the catalyst. I quickly dealt with my drug abuse habit and found purpose in waste picking and processing," Kashesha shares. What was once a desperate struggle is now a thriving business, generating income that supports his family.

Kashesha credits the guidance of Gender Links' Gender Focal Person, who walked with him every step of the way. "The training on access to finance was a game-changer. I learned to navigate savings groups and business registration, securing loans from Empower Bank and Zimbabwe Women’s Microfinance Bank," he explains. Today, Kashesha is a successful entrepreneur in cooperative waste management and individual poultry production. "I am grateful for the emphasis on record-keeping and marketing. Ministries like Youth Empowerment and Women Affairs were engaged by Gender Links through the Local Authority and they provided crucial support with business registration and access to finance," he acknowledges.

The impact of the programme on Kashesha's life is evident. "Every morning, I wake up refreshed, ready to work, and proud to support my family. My parents beam with pride at their reformed son," he beams. The programme has had a significant impact on the average income of participants in Murewa Rural District. Prior to the programme, the average income was around USD 10. However, after participating in the programme, the average income rose to USD 115. This substantial increase has had a ripple effect throughout the district, empowering women to become breadwinners and providing for their families.

As Kashesha works towards Zimbabwe's Vision 2030, he is paying it forward, mentoring others in proposal writing and business management. "I'm working towards Zimbabwe's Vision 2030, and I see the ripple effects of this programme. Women are now breadwinners, providing for their families. My community's inspired by my journey - they see me in my work suit, collecting raw materials, and know that change is possible," KASHESHA says proudly. He has built a round hut in Duku village and is committed to contributing to his community's growth and development.

Kashesha's story is a testament to the power of empowerment and support. As he looks to the future, Kashesha remains committed to mentoring others and contributing to his community's growth and development. "My story's a living example of what's possible when opportunity meets determination," he concludes.
