Zimbabwe: Khayelihle's journey to empower local farmers

In the heart of Umguza Rural District Council, a remarkable transformation has taken place, thanks to the unwavering dedication and marketing expertise of 33-year-old Khayelihle Moyo. As the marketing chairperson of Thuthukani Horticulture Cooperative, Khayelihle has been driven by a passion to enhance the cooperative's fortunes and uplift its members.

"I saw an opportunity to take our produce beyond the local markets," Khayelihle explains. "We needed to think bigger and tap into the demand from larger retailers and restaurants. Our farmers work tirelessly to grow the freshest produce, and it was time their hard work paid off."

With support from Gender Links and the Embassy of Sweden in Zimbabwe, Moyo implemented innovative strategies that secured profitable partnerships with major market players such as Thandabantu Public Market, Food Lovers Market, and various leading schools. This initiative created new revenue opportunities for 46 local farmers—33 women, 9 youths, and 4 men—who had previously faced economic challenges.

The results have been nothing short of remarkable. Within just six months, the cooperative's revenue surged from USD 142 to USD 4,427, while Moyo's monthly income rose from USD 10 to USD 50. This extraordinary growth has not only enhanced the farmers' livelihoods but also revitalized the local economy.

"For me, it's not just about the numbers," Moyo says. "It's about the impact we're having on our community. We're creating jobs, generating income, and providing fresh produce to our people. That's what gets me out of bed every morning."

Moyo's journey serves as a shining example of the impact of innovation, perseverance, and collaboration. Her story illustrates that marginalized communities can achieve prosperity with the right support and determination.

As Moyo looks to the future, she remains committed to empowering local farmers, broadening the cooperative's influence, and fostering a sustainable impact within her community. "I want to inspire others to pursue a more equitable future," she says. "Together, we can create a brighter tomorrow for ourselves, our children, and our communities."
