Economic and climate justice

Economic and climate justice
Economic and Climate Justice (ECJ) is one of Gender Links’ strategic pillars. This programme has made strides in addressing economic inequalities that exist between women and men, while at the same time reducing the prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV) among women. The programme addresses the economic roots of GBV through promoting economic empowerment. Research shows that poverty and economic dependence contribute to the perpetuation of GBV.
Natural disasters linked to climate change also exacerbate GBV. On the other hand, gender- and climate-aware economic development can help to address both. GL has long tracked gender and climate change in the SADC region through the Barometer. The ECJ is implementing an innovative Gender Inclusive Local Economic Development programme in Zimbabwe that includes promoting green economies. GL Zimbabwe is also supporting all 92 local authorities to develop gender-responsive budgets.
