South Africa: Alice Lieta

Alice Lieta’s journey is one of growth, confidence, and determination shaped by learning and adaptation. Through the Sunrise Campaign, she gained new understanding around gender‑based violence, entrepreneurship, and self‑belief, which helped her become more independent and respected within her family and community.
These lessons strengthened Radieta Enterprise, which began as a small tuck shop selling clothes and crops and later expanded to include fat cakes, atchaar, sneakers, and clothing sold across different locations such as schools, malls, and taxi ranks. Faced with strong competition and copycat businesses, Alice responded by diversifying her products, adjusting her target market, keeping prices affordable, and improving how and where she sells. By carefully recording sales, managing stock, saving through a savings group, and even hiring part‑time help, her income increased and her confidence grew.
Today, Alice not only supports her household through her business but also looks ahead with ambition—planning to expand into fresh produce and meat sales—showing how resilience, learning, and adaptability can turn a small idea into a sustainable livelihood.
