Mauritius uses a first-past-the-post (FPTP) electoral system for its national and local elections, and there is no quota at the national level. At the local level, elections are held for municipal councils, which are usually conducted under the FPTP system.

Mauritius increased the proportion of women in local government from 6% to 27% in the 2015 elections through a strong advocacy campaign that accompanied the adoption of a gender-neutral quota. However, the proportion of women decreased to 23% in the 2022 elections, showing that gains are not permanent and that advocacy must continue.
