Safe Abortion Alliance of Southern Africa

The Safe Abortion Alliance of Southern Africa (SAASA) is a growing regional, feminist-led coalition of grassroots organisations, healthcare advocates, legal experts and youth activists across Southern Africa that was formed in response to restrictive laws and stigma surrounding abortion.
Voice and Choice fund members founded SAASA at a learning and sharing summit in November 2023, and its action plan was developed at the SADC Heads of State Summit in the same year, where an agreement was reached to broaden membership.
The secretariat, hosted by a founding member organisation, the Sexual and Reproductive Justice Coalition, supports daily operations, partnership development and communications. SAASA’s structure is intentionally collaborative and decentralised, ensuring that local contexts and community voices shape regional strategies for creating awareness around body autonomy, access to safe abortion and reproductive justice in the region.

Advocacy and accountability
We engage youth advocates, create policy resources and monitor governments’ compliance with the Maputo Protocol to advocate for systemic change and legal reform.
Movement building
We capacitate and empower local organisations and collaborate with them to develop initiatives that prioritise care, choice and dignity for individuals regarding body autonomy and abortion.
