Mauritius: Mieux raconter les realites LGBTQIA+

The article reports on a media training organised by Gender Links Mauritius in Port-Louis as part of the Marang Southern Africa LGBTIQ Fund. The initiative aims to strengthen how journalists and communicators report on LGBTQIA+ issues, against a backdrop of persistent legal, social and institutional barriers despite growing visibility of LGBTQIA+ movements in southern Africa.
The training brought together media professionals to reflect on ethical, rights-based journalism. Facilitators and speakers highlighted the risks of sensationalism, stereotyping and poor contextualisation, and emphasised respectful language, source safety and accurate representation of diverse LGBTQIA+ experiences. Participants also examined media responsibility in moderating online comments to avoid amplifying hate speech.
The programme matters because media coverage plays a central role in shaping public opinion and democratic debate. By improving professional standards and understanding of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, the initiative seeks to contribute to more informed public discourse and stronger protection of LGBTQIA+ rights in Mauritius and the wider region.
