Malawi: Brave escape from violence

The article tells the story of Alepha Chipojola from Phalombe district, who survived prolonged domestic violence and eventually escaped an abusive marriage. Through her account, the story outlines how emotional, physical, and economic abuse escalated over time, including violence during pregnancy and deprivation of basic needs. 

After a severe assault, Alepha sought help from the Community Victim Support Unit (CVSU), a community structure supported through a YONECO‑implemented project. The CVSU assisted her with medical care, counselling, and referral to formal justice systems, while also supporting her economic recovery through community savings groups. 

The story highlights the role of traditional leaders, community structures, and district authorities in addressing sexual and gender‑based violence. It shows how coordinated local action has increased reporting, accountability, and survivor support, while positioning Alepha’s recovery as an example of resilience and the importance of speaking out against abuse.
