Mauritius: Maurice autorise l’enregistrement des enfants intersexes à la naissance

The article reports on findings from the World Bank’s 2024 report on equality of opportunity for sexual and gender minorities, which assesses legal and policy frameworks in 64 countries, including Mauritius. The report highlights how discrimination against sexual and gender minorities undermines human development, economic growth and social inclusion worldwide.

It outlines global gaps in protection, noting that many countries continue to criminalise sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, and lack safeguards in education, employment and access to justice. These shortcomings contribute to exclusion, violence and limited participation in public life for affected communities.

Within this context, Mauritius is presented as making specific legal advances. The country provides protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation in key sectors and allows the registration of intersex children at birth without mandatory gender markers. The article explains why these measures matter, while also noting remaining gaps, particularly around hate crime legislation and broader legal recognition.
