Mauritius : Des combats locaux à une vision continentale pour les droits LGBTQIA+

The article reports on the seventh Pan Africa ILGA regional conference held in Johannesburg from 24 to 28 November, which brought together human rights defenders, researchers and regional and international organisations working on LGBTQIA+ equality across Africa.
Discussions at the conference focused on resilience in hostile political and social environments, strengthening solidarity within movements, long-term advocacy strategies, and the importance of mental health for activists. The exchanges highlighted shared challenges and context-specific approaches across different African countries.
The story features the participation of Young Queer Alliance representative Jürgen Lasavanne, who shared lessons from Mauritius’s legal struggle leading to the decriminalisation of homosexuality. His testimony stressed that legal victories have limits and must be accompanied by sustained, intersectional and community-based action. The article underscores why continental solidarity matters for advancing LGBTQIA+ rights in Africa.
