Lesotho: Turning a tide in the Lesotho manufacturing arena

The article explores how Basotho entrepreneurs are gradually transforming Lesotho’s manufacturing sector by developing locally made products despite long-standing dependence on imports. It highlights the challenges faced by small manufacturers, including limited access to finance, equipment, raw materials and markets, while showing how persistence and support structures are helping businesses survive and grow.

Through the experiences of Ntahli Mafisa of Sehlootho Hair Products and Rethabile Pitso of Cotton Soft Toilet Paper, the story illustrates both women’s and men’s pathways into manufacturing. Mafisa’s business grew from addressing everyday hair care challenges using natural ingredients, while Pitso’s toilet paper venture reflects the operational and financial constraints confronting start-ups in the sector.

The article also examines the role of institutional support, trade exposure and market access initiatives, including regional trade fairs, consultancy services and the Made in Lesotho Cooperative. It underscores manufacturing as a viable avenue for youth employment, women-led enterprises and economic resilience in Lesotho.
