South Africa: The Transformative Journey of Youth Empowerment in Ekurhuleni

Breaking Barriers: From Despair to Hope

In the heart of Ekurhuleni, communities like Daveyton, Etwatwa, Kingsway, Cloverdene, and Slovo Park have long battled the harsh realities of poverty, unemployment, and limited access to education. For many young people, these challenges were compounded by gender-based violence and rigid societal expectations, creating a cycle of despair that seemed impossible to escape. Without resources or support systems, the youth faced emotional trauma and economic marginalization, leaving them feeling trapped and voiceless.

Against this backdrop, a beacon of hope emerged—the Women’s Leadership Social Empowerment Initiative. This program set out to rewrite the narrative for young people in these communities, offering not just skills and opportunities, but a renewed sense of purpose and belonging.

Who Are They?

This story celebrates a group of resilient youth who refused to be defined by adversity. Survivors of violence, poverty, and neglect, they came together under the initiative to reclaim their futures. Before joining, many were unemployed, lacking the skills and confidence to compete in a demanding job market. Today, they stand on the threshold of transformation, ready to enter the workforce through the South African Allied Youth Council (SAAYC) National Youth Service (NYS) program.

What makes them extraordinary is not just their determination, but their solidarity. They have built a community of support, turning shared struggles into collective strength. Their journey is a testament to resilience, empowerment, and the power of opportunity.

The Turning Point

The initiative tackled critical issues head-on:

  • Gender-Based Violence: Providing safe spaces and resources for survivors.
  • Unemployment: Delivering accredited digital skills training and job readiness workshops.
  • Mental Health: Offering trauma-informed counseling to restore confidence and hope.
  • Education Access: Equipping youth with tools to thrive in a competitive economy.

Through counselling, computer training, and employment preparation, the program laid the foundation for change. Partnerships with SAAYC opened doors to real job opportunities, while community engagement projects nurtured leadership and advocacy.

What Has Changed?

The results speak volumes. Twenty participants have signed employment contracts under the NYS program, marking a historic shift from joblessness to financial independence. Accredited computer training has boosted digital literacy, while counselling sessions have improved mental health and resilience. Families benefit from increased stability, and communities feel the ripple effect as empowered youth inspire others to dream bigger.

“Before this program, I felt like my life had no direction—just another girl trapped by my circumstances. But now, after counselling and computer training, I’ve signed my first employment contract. For the first time, I wake up excited about my future.”
Nhlanhla Kunene, Participant

“Seeing Nhlanhla transform from a shy young woman into a confident mentor has been extraordinary. Her progress embodies why we do this work.”
Bathabile Mthombeni, Program Facilitator

“I used to feel lost and alone, but now I have friends who understand my struggles. Together, we support each other and celebrate our achievements.”
Mpho Matlala, Participant

Evidence of Impact

  • Employment: 20 participants secured positions with SAAYC under NYS, confirmed by signed contracts.
  • Skills Development: Pre- and post-training assessments show marked improvement in digital literacy.
  • Mental Health: Counselling feedback indicates reduced hopelessness and increased self-esteem.
  • Community Engagement: Youth-led projects foster resilience and advocacy across neighbourhoods.

Sustainability and Next Steps

The journey doesn’t end here. Strategic partnerships with SB2 Consulting aim to expand skills training, mentorship, and career pathways. By co-creating opportunities and strengthening organizational capacity, the initiative ensures that empowerment is not a moment—but a movement.
