Mauritius: Neuf Mauriciens sur dix estiment que les personnes intersexes méritent des droits égaux

The article presents findings from the Fear & Fairness survey conducted by The Other Foundation, which examines public attitudes towards sexual minorities and gender non-conforming people in Mauritius. The research shows strong support for equal rights in principle, particularly for intersex people, with nine out of ten respondents agreeing that intersex individuals should receive equal legal and social recognition.

While support for equality is high, the article highlights uneven levels of social acceptance. Acceptance is strongest for intersex people and weaker for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, especially in relation to marriage equality and family inclusion. Cultural values and religious beliefs continue to shape attitudes, reflecting tensions between human rights principles and social norms.

The story explains why these findings matter for public debate and advocacy. Civil society voices stress that objective data helps counter misinformation and hate speech, guides activist strategies and reinforces the importance of safety, dignity and equal rights for intersex, trans and LGBTQIA+ communities in Mauritius.
