Lesotho: Basotho women rewriting Lesotho’s digital future

The article examines how Basotho women are increasingly participating in and reshaping Lesotho’s digital landscape, despite persistent gender gaps in access to technology, training, and role models. It highlights how stereotypes and limited opportunities continue to exclude many women and girls from technology spaces, even as the country moves toward a digital economy.

Through the experiences of young women such as Katleho Thapeli and Nomvula Tseko, the story illustrates how curiosity, persistence, and supportive learning environments enable women to build confidence in coding and digital skills. Educators and practitioners, including representatives from Girls Coding Academy and the National University of Lesotho Innovation Hub, emphasise that the barriers women face are structural rather than related to ability.

The article underscores the importance of early exposure, mentorship, and targeted training to close the digital gender gap. It argues that with inclusive support systems, Basotho women can play a central role in shaping Lesotho’s digital future and ensuring that technological progress benefits the whole society.
