Lesotho: When periods make girls skip periods

The article examines how lack of access to menstrual hygiene products and adequate school facilities causes girls in Lesotho to miss school during menstruation. Using the experience of learners at Ipopeng Primary School in Leribe district, the story shows how poverty and stigma force girls to stay at home for several days each month, disrupting their education.
Girls, educators and community actors describe the emotional distress, embarrassment and learning gaps that result from menstrual-related absenteeism. School authorities respond by pooling personal resources to support affected learners, while civil society organisations provide menstrual health education and reusable sanitary products.
The article situates the issue within a wider gender equality and public policy context, highlighting the role of UNFPA, government programmes and men’s advocacy groups. It frames menstrual health as a matter of dignity, equal access to education and long-term empowerment for girls.
