Gender and Media Progress Study 2026
The GMPS is an adaptation of the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) methodology, that has borrowed heavily from GL’s media monitoring studies in Southern Africa since 2003. The GMMP is a one day study of women’s representation and portrayal in the media conducted every five years since the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995. In 2025 (the thirtieth anniversary of the Beijing conference) only three African countries participated in the GMMP. As part of developing indicators for the 2026 Voice and Choice Barometer, GL conducted one day monitoring on 28 May 2026 covering 16 African countries, a total of 2060 news items, in print, online, TV and radio. Although this study is not as extensive as previous GL studies covering a whole month, it provides far more up to date and accurate data on Southern Africa than the global study.
