Mauritius: Trans et genres divers - une formation pour des médias sans clichés

The article reports on a training session organised by the Young Queer Alliance in Port-Louis to promote inclusive and respectful media reporting on transgender and gender-diverse people. Held at the Media Trust, the workshop aimed to improve journalists’ and content creators’ understanding of gender-related concepts and to strengthen ethical coverage of LGBTQIA+ realities.

During the training, facilitators explained key distinctions between sex and gender and introduced concepts such as gender identity, gender roles, gender expression and grammatical gender. Participants were exposed to a range of gender identities, including cisgender, transgender and non-binary identities, with practical examples to help reduce confusion, stereotypes and inaccurate representation in media work.

The session concluded with a discussion on how transgender people are portrayed in Mauritian media. Participants highlighted ongoing challenges such as sensationalism, persistent clichés and the limited presence of expert voices. The article underlines why improving media practices matters for fair representation, dignity and public understanding of trans and gender-diverse communities.
