Botswana: Inside the cycle, how power dynamics drive GBV

The article examines gender-based violence as a structural problem driven by unequal power relations within households and communities. It argues that GBV is rooted in entrenched patriarchal norms that normalise male dominance and female submission, creating conditions where violence is used to maintain control rather than resolve conflict.

Drawing on perspectives from Business Botswana and research by UN Women and the World Bank, the story highlights how economic dependence, social stigma and rigid gender roles trap survivors in abusive relationships. Financial control, fear of social exclusion and victim-blaming often discourage survivors from leaving abusive partners or pursuing justice, even when violence is reported.

The article stresses that breaking the cycle of GBV requires a comprehensive response that combines legal accountability with survivor-centred services, economic empowerment and cultural change. It emphasises the importance of engaging communities, challenging harmful norms and addressing the intergenerational transmission of violence to create safer and more equal societies.
