Botswana: Botswana’s GBV case backlog deepens as specialized courts falter

The article reports on growing delays in the handling of gender‑based violence (GBV) cases in Botswana’s magistrates’ courts, as revealed in the 2025 Administration of Justice annual report. Despite the establishment of specialised GBV courts, disposal rates declined in 2025, with more than half of all GBV cases remaining unresolved by year‑end.
The report attributes the backlog to systemic challenges, including severe shortages of magistrates, support staff and basic resources. Many specialised courts operate in name only, as judicial officers are frequently assigned general caseloads. Delays are further compounded by long forensic evidence processing times and deteriorating court infrastructure.
Civil society actors and legal experts warn that prolonged case delays undermine survivor confidence and allow perpetrators to continue causing harm. Advocates call for sustained investment, trained personnel and deliberate prioritisation of GBV matters to ensure timely justice and restore trust in the judicial system.
