Embracing the fundamental principles of democracy
Anoushka Jyotee Greedharree Oogarah has first heard of Gender Links (GL) through its shelter, Safe Haven Halfway Home (SHHH). She expresses her desire to extend her warmest congratulations to the staff of GL SHHH for their extraordinary efforts in providing unwavering support to survivors of Gender-Based Violence. With genuine admiration, she urges the dedicated staff members to persevere in their pursuit of excellence, acknowledging the profound impact they have made in the lives of those affected. Greedharree had the opportunity of attending one of GL’s workshops on gender mainstreaming. In her exploration of the workshop, she says having enjoyed a meticulously orchestrated event that left her feeling enlightened and empowered. The experience proved to be a transformative journey, expanding her understanding of the intricate concept of gender mainstreaming. She argues that while some open-minded people supported women's active participation in politics, others did not. According to her, these disparities in mindsets correctly reflect the society in which we live, and seminars on gender mainstreaming are crucial to identifying the causes of such problems. At the District Council of Moka, Greedharree represented her village after being elected as a councillor in Verdun-Alma in November 2020. She was committed to bringing about change in her village as a young woman councillor. She immediately realised that there was not enough being done for young people, particularly young women. With a clear vision in her mind, she set out to embrace a youth-responsive approach. She set out goals to establish a platform for youngsters, organise recreational and athletics programmes to assist youth, and instil in them a sense of purpose. She does, however, highlight the difficult fight against red tapism. According to Greedharree, the path to change is far from smooth, as bureaucracy often hinders progress. In the ever-evolving realm of politics, one can expect to encounter a myriad of challenges that demand careful navigation. In the midst of the Covid-19 lockdown, she points out her election as District councillor, a moment that brought forth a set of distinctive challenges. There were restrictions on social gatherings, and numerous initiatives were delayed. She also opened up about the trials and triumphs of being a woman in the world of politics. With resilience and determination, she describes the challenges she faced, while also highlighting the invaluable lessons and personal growth that came she went through.Greedharree continues by pointing out that politics presents unique problems, thus one should anticipate them all and be ready for anything and everything. While she acknowledges that all elected representatives encounter obstacles, she notes that women may be the target of more overtly misogynistic and sexist attacks. In a series of unfortunate events, she found herself facing a barrage of harassments that left her feeling nothing short of humiliated and enraged. In the face of adversity, she found solace in the unwavering support of her mother, a pillar of strength who fearlessly defended her during this trying ordeal. Overcoming such challenges have boosted her resilience and her willingness to thrive. In the face of adversity, Greedharree exudes a sense of pride as she reflects upon the remarkable achievements her team has accomplished over the span of two years. She remains resolute in her pursuit of the ambitious goals set forth, aspiring to see the entire program on the agenda materialise by the year 2026. In a bid to foster stronger bonds among community members, a series of vibrant celebrations and social events were meticulously organised. From the much-anticipated end-of-year parties to the heartwarming tradition of gift-giving during the festive season, these gatherings aimed to bring joy and unity to all. Additionally, special outings were thoughtfully arranged for the elderly, ensuring that they too could partake in the merriment and feel the warmth of community spirit. Youth-focused recreational events such as football tournaments and board games were also planned. With a deep commitment to the well-being of their constituents, the District Council demonstrated their unwavering dedication by going above and beyond the call of duty. Recognising the urgent requirement for a prosthetic leg of a young lady in the community,, they swiftly mobilised their resources to ensure that no financial obstacle would hinder her path to recovery. Along the same note of solidarity, the District Council has stepped up to provide much-needed financial support for a number of funerals and accident cases. This generous gesture has not only alleviated the burden on grieving families, but also served as a shining example of the council's commitment to the welfare of its residents and its community.Greedharree also mentioned that the council ensured that roads were well-lit, paved, and watertight throughout her term. Rivers were cleaned, speed bumps were set up, trash cans were put in public areas, and the neighbourhood was given trash cans. The neighbourhood children's garden, football field, and cemeteries were all kept in a proper state. Beyond that, the council also handled ground levelling, rubbish collecting, pruning, and clipping of undergrowth for public gatherings, religious and official occasions.Greedharree further explains that she frequently shuttled between Mauritius and Morocco for both professional and personal commitments. As a result, she was unable to accomplish all she had hoped to in Mauritius. Regrettably, the aspirations she held for the younger generation, particularly the female youth, did not come to fruition. Being torn between two contrasting aspirations, Greedharree ultimately decided to leave her position as councillor in order to earn a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) overseas. Her belief was that her resignation was not only in her best interests, but also in the best interests of the community, as she would make room for other ambitious young councillors to effect more lasting change. According to Greedharree, her professional path has always been fluid. She earned a diploma in Tourism Management and worked in the tourism industry. She then entered the realm of Business Processing Outsourcing, where she began as an Accounting Officer and ascended the corporate ladder to become a Business Transformation Senior Analyst. From her humble beginning in the political arena, she has now embarked on an international journey. Greedharree continues by stating that she was unaffected by the derogatory comments made about her career decisions by some individuals. She says that it is normal to have changes in life; what is most important is to seize opportunities and make the most of them. She knows that there are other beautiful experiences awaiting her further in life. She passionately expresses her desire to witness a surge of women in politics. Two prominent female figures in the political arena she admires and believes set a remarkable example are none other than Kamala Harris and Jacinda Adern . In a thought-provoking revelation, Greedharree, astutely points out the toll that politics can exact on one's very essence, leaving them depleted and drained over time, as Jacinda Adern has resigned from her post as Prime Minister of New-Zealand. Departing from politics is a decision for one's own well-being.In a heartfelt expression of gratitude, she graciously highlights the constant support bestowed upon both herself and her sister by their doting parents. Recognising the pivotal role played by their unwavering encouragement, she acknowledges their instrumental contribution in nurturing their academic pursuits and professional endeavours. She opens up about her upbringing, shedding light on the balance her parents struck between discipline and autonomy. While acknowledging their strict nature, she emphasises that her parents never failed to grant their children the precious gift of freedom in shaping their own destinies. She opens up about her parents' aspirations for their beloved offsprings; they harboured grand dreams of ensuring their daughters received a top-notch education and achieved financial independence. These aspirations undoubtedly reflect the deep love and concern her parents held for their daughters’ future. Those aspirations were realised, as she reiterates. She reinforces her conviction that all parents should encourage their children to pursue their dreams in order to improve their mental health and deepen their bonds. Her biggest priority right now, is completing her MBA. She continues by revealing her uncertainty regarding a potential return to the political arena or to Mauritius. She aspires to be self-employed so that she may "bring more to the table" and improve people's lives through her work. Greedharree praises the excellent work done by non-governmental organisations to empower women, but she also emphasises the need for a mentoring programme for women who have to cope with difficult situations including such sexism.Greedharree passionately articulates her grand vision for the future of her beloved country, Mauritius. With determination, she envisions a nation that stands tall as a beacon of integrity, free from the shackles of corruption. Embracing the fundamental principles of democracy, she dreams of a society where freedom of expression flourishes, empowering every citizen to voice their opinions without fear or restraint. Recognising the immense potential within her fellow countrymen, she envisions a Mauritius where citizens are actively engaged in shaping a better future, working hand in hand to address pressing issues and drive meaningful progress.
