South Africa: Path to Safety and Health

Moswen NGO is transforming young people’s access to SRHR information and services in Kimberley, creating safe spaces, increasing knowledge and building community support systems that protect health, dignity and rights.

The project, led by Moswen NGO in Kimberley, Northern Cape Province, responded to challenges facing adolescents including limited access to contraception, high teenage pregnancy rates, stigma around sexuality and lack of comprehensive sexuality education. It aimed to prevent GBV, promote healthy relationships, improve access to SRHR services and empower youth. The change came through outreach campaigns, school sessions, peer education, clinic partnerships, support groups and advocacy.

A shift occurred as young people gained confidence, knowledge and services, while communities embraced dialogue. The significance lies in advancing SRHR and gender equality, breaking silence, strengthening support systems and contributing to policy dialogue. Sustainability will be achieved through peer educators, partnerships with schools and clinics, referral networks, and advocacy for long-term reforms, with potential for scaling to other regions.
