The One in Nine Campaign was established in 2006 by a group of individual feminists who were working for different civil society organisations. The Campaign was established to support and stand in solidarity with a young women, Fezekile Kuzwayo know to the media and public as Khwezi; who had opened a case of rape against the then deputy president of the African National Congress (ANC). She was vilified, shamed and called names by the public and the group decided to stand with her in solidarity and to support her through the case to highlight the failures of the criminal justice system in dealing and responding to survivors of sexual violence.
The organisation aims to highlight the secondary victimisation that survivors receive when speaking out and seeking justice and assistance from officials of the state who are meant to serve and protect survivors.
The WVLSA project aims to create space for women to come together to share, think and develop strategies and actions to address issues faced by womxn in our communities, particularly gender based violence and Femicide; to amplify our voices and document our experiences. It aims to encourage and increase critical thinking around issues affecting womxn at a local and global level by strengthening participants’ understanding of feminism and feminist theory. Developing strategies to end violence against womxn, changing the narratives of women’s experiences using art as a tool for liberation and shifting mindsets around the GBV discourse.
