SADC: V&C Summit: Celebrating 25 years of impact and collective power

From the 15th to the 18th March, Gender Links hosted the Voice and Choice Summit 2026. A powerful gathering that not only brought together changemakers from across the globe, but also marked an incredible milestone: 25 years of Gender Links’ commitment to advancing gender equality.

The summit was a vibrant convergence of grantees, activists, and organisations from different countries, all united by a shared purpose, to amplify voices, drive change, and build safer, more inclusive communities. It was more than just an event; it was a celebration of resilience, collaboration, and the transformative power of collective action.

Throughout the summit, we heard inspiring stories from organisations doing groundbreaking work in their communities. From efforts to eradicate Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), to advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), promoting climate justice, and advocating for equality. Each story was a reminder that change is not only possible, but already happening.

One of the highlights was learning about the impactful work of WOSSO, alongside the incredible contributions of young women leading change in their respective countries. These young leaders are ensuring that women’s voices are not silenced, challenging deeply rooted inequalities, and creating spaces where women can speak, lead, and thrive.

We also had the opportunity to engage with organisations championing the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community across different regions. Their work in policy advocacy and social justice is crucial in ensuring that no one is discriminated against for who they are. Equally inspiring were the voices of people living with disabilities, who continue to push for inclusion, accessibility, and equal opportunities.

The summit created a space where ideas flowed freely, where funders and grantees could connect meaningfully, share insights, and build lasting partnerships. It reinforced the importance of collaboration in driving sustainable impact.

One of my personal highlights was my role in capturing moments from various site events. Through my lens, I witnessed firsthand the passion and dedication behind the work being done. The Sunrise Campaign session stood out as particularly impactful. This initiative embodies what many organisations have been advocating for women’s empowerment through practical support.

The campaign’s focus on equipping women with skills and resources is especially relevant for survivors of GBV. One of the most pressing challenges faced by victims is the fear of financial instability, “How will I provide for my children if I leave?” Expanding initiatives like the Sun Rise Campaign to organisations working directly with GBV survivors could be life-changing. By providing skills training and start-up capital, we can empower women not only to leave abusive environments but to rebuild their lives with dignity and independence. This is the kind of intervention that can truly save lives.

Another powerful moment was engaging with the Tosunga Baninga exhibition. While it aimed to educate, it also sparked meaningful dialogue. One participant suggested making the exhibition more inclusive by incorporating a wider variety of shoes symbolising the diverse experiences of all women. This idea resonated deeply. It highlighted the importance of representation and ensuring that every woman, regardless of her background, can see her story reflected.

What stood out most was the value of bringing funders and grantees together in one space. These interactions allow for deeper understanding, shared learning, and stronger collaboration. Grantees gain insights from one another, while funders develop a clearer picture of the real, on-the-ground impact of their support.

The Voice and Choice Summit 2026 was truly impactful and enriching. It was a space of learning, connection, and inspiration. Being part of this experience, and part of the Gender Links team was an honour. Together, we are not just imagining a better future; we are building it.
