Zimbabwe: Educating communities for better health outcomes

A young changemaker in Marondera District is transforming stigma into empowerment by equipping women, girls, men and boys with accurate SRHR knowledge, fostering safe dialogue spaces, and building community champions who sustain change. Vimbai Rugare Nyika is a young changemaker from Zimbabwe, dedicated to advancing women’s rights and gender equality. As a Women of the South Speak Out (WOSSO) Fellow and member of Women’s Action Group (WAG), she works to ensure that women and young people have access to accurate information on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

Before her intervention, communities in Marondera District faced limited access to SRHR information. Cultural taboos prevented open conversations, leading to misinformation, early pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and poor health outcomes. Women’s voices were rarely heard in decision‑making, and national strategies often overlooked grassroots’ realities. Through her WOSSO-supported advocacy plan, Vimbai created safe dialogue spaces and conducted SRHR and Bodily Autonomy and Integrity (BAI) trainings for 20 women.

Pre‑ and post‑assessments showed knowledge increasing from 40% to 85%. Women who participated are now community champions, teaching others and becoming part of referral networks for SRHR services. Recognizing the importance of inclusive change, she also led HeForShe dialogues with 24 men and boys. These focused on gender equality, SRHR, and positive masculinity. Many participants shifted from resistance to allyship, helping foster safer, more equitable environments.

The change has strengthened community engagement and improved service delivery. Women and girls are more informed and confident. Men are increasingly supportive. Referral networks have grown, linking individuals to essential services. Sustainability is built into the model. Champions remain active through a WhatsApp group used for updates, peer support, and coordination. Partnerships with the Ministry of Women Affairs and other stakeholders ensure alignment with national priorities. WAG’s ongoing presence ensures continuity, embedding the intervention into long-term strategies.
