South Africa: Flow Without Fear: Advocacy for menstrual health and bodily right

The Organization for Young Women’s Dignity (TOFYWD) implemented a project focused on SRHR advocacy and gender transformation in Johannesburg North. The project addressed the challenges faced by women and girls, including high levels of GBV, limited access to SRHR resources, and exclusion from decision-making. The intervention also engaged young men and boys, recognising their role in addressing harmful gender norms. Through workshops, dialogues, mentorship, and peer-led activities, participants developed confidence, leadership skills, and a shared vision for gender equality.

The project created spaces where men and boys critically examined masculinity, accountability, and their role in preventing GBV. These sessions encouraged collaboration between genders, positioning men as champions rather than bystanders. The initiative enabled both young women and young men to participate actively in SRHR advocacy and GBV prevention, enhancing community awareness and fostering healthier relationships.

The change was evident in improved attitudes, increased dialogue, and wider community participation. Women and girls gained visibility and confidence, while men and boys developed the skills to act as peer educators and allies. This contributed to stronger collective ownership of gender justice efforts and supported long-term advocacy for SRHR and GBV prevention.

The project’s significance lies in transforming GBV prevention into a shared responsibility between genders. Sustained mentorship, safe spaces for girls, and structured male champion programmes will ensure ongoing community engagement. TOFYWD aims to scale the initiative through partnerships with schools and community leaders, embedding gender-transformative approaches into long-term work.
