Mauritius, Association Kinouete - Empowering teenage girls in conflict with the law for a fruitful development.

The project is geared towards facilitating the process of rehabilitation and re integration of teenage girls from rehabilitation youth centre and correctional youth centre.Kinouété believes that each detainee is a person entitled to a second chance and capable of leading a successful life. Kinouété strives to be an example, a factor of change and a facilitator in the process of rehabilitation and reintegration of detainees.

1. Reduce juvenile delinquency.
2. Reduce number of youths in prisons.
3. Mitigate the impact of detention of parents on their children.
4. Re create family links to avoid putting children in institutions.
5. Inculcate healthy lifestyle through sports

The following activities are organized by Kinouete:

1. Prevention activities and awareness.
2. Counselling in and out of Rehabilitation Youth Centre.
3. Outings/team building
4. Counselling
5. Site visits
6. Family support
7. Job referrals

In all, there are 107 beneficiaries with 92 being women and 15 being men.The budget for this project amounts to RS 1,910,000.The results of the project are being measured through client supervision and field/site visits per week and during night time depending on the severity of the situations.Key tools for monitoring and evaluation include monthly statistics, NGO key performance indicators and case management- done on a case to case basis. Monitoring is equally done as followed:

1. Getting permission from authorities to do the activities.
2. Finding a shelter for girls who have nowhere to go after their release.

The impact of the project has allowed successful links with other institutions and has favoured networking between government institutions in achieving common goals. The project is easy to replicate because good practices can be shared with other institutions.
