Mauritius: Trans et genres divers : une formation pour des médias sans clichés

This article discusses how Mauritian media needs to change the way it presents information regarding trans and gender-diverse communities by focusing on an inequalities training in inclusive reporting that was recently organised by the Young Queer Alliance (YQA) as its case study. With its roots in some of the most important findings of that training session, this paper will look at aspects that journalists must incorporate to promote equality in reporting.

Positioned against the backdrop of ongoing conversations at the national level in relation to representation, equality, and human rights, the narrative links mainstream media practices and procedures to the realities experienced by the transgender and gender-diverse groups in Mauritius. By giving paramount importance to the opinions and know-how of LGBTIQ rights activists, it fills important gaps and imperfections associated with mainstream media coverage. This article, intended for the public and all professionals involved in mainstream media, creates added value by dispelling myths associated with important terminology and giving prominence to neglected voices.
