South Africa: Greater Tzaneen strengthens community action on human rights

The Greater Tzaneen Municipality marked Human Rights Day with a well‑attended celebration at the Old Fire Hall on 22 April 2026, bringing together community members and key institutions to deepen understanding of rights and responsibilities.
Representatives from the South African Human Rights Commission and Legal Aid South Africa shared practical information on the origins of human rights, the different generations of rights, and the importance of access to justice. The session placed strong emphasis on legal protection and how communities can use available mechanisms to defend their rights.
A key highlight focused on marriage laws in South Africa. Legal Aid South Africa clarified that customary marriages are legally recognised and automatically in community of property, while also explaining alternatives such as marriage out of community of property with accrual. Participants also learned about the importance of registering civil unions with the Department of Home Affairs. This information equipped attendees to make informed choices and safeguard their rights.
Naledi Masipa, Gender Links Local Action for Gender Justice Facilitator, outlined the purpose of the day and reflected on the impact of Gender Links, noting: “I personally have seen how Gender Links transforms lives, turning pain into purpose and communities into agents of change.”
Speaking on behalf of the Mayor, Councillor Maggy Makwela called for collective responsibility. She stressed that human rights require action, particularly in the face of ongoing gender‑based violence and urged all stakeholders to play their part in promoting dignity and equality. The celebration successfully created a platform for dialogue, learning and collaboration. The knowledge shared contributes to building a more informed and empowered community committed to protecting and exercising human rights.
