Botswana: Equality at a crossroads - is gender policy ignoring boys?

The article examines growing concerns that Botswana’s gender equality progress has not adequately addressed the challenges faced by boys and young men. While national gender policies have contributed to significant gains for women and girls, emerging data suggests that boys are increasingly lagging behind in education, mental health and social wellbeing.

Drawing on insights from Botswana Institute for Development Policy Analysis research fellow Thabile Samboma, as well as UNICEF and United Nations data, the story highlights disparities in school performance, exposure to violence and limited access to early childhood education among boys. Cultural expectations around masculinity are identified as key factors contributing to disengagement and reluctance to seek support.

The article argues for a shift towards a more gender‑responsive policy framework that recognises the needs of both boys and girls. It calls for improved data collection, early intervention programmes, positive male mentorship and community involvement to ensure gender equality efforts promote balanced and inclusive development.
