The Alliance Chair, Emma Kaliya was on March 13 appointed as a champion for equal pay alongside high profile government officials, celebrities and gender equality activists. The official announcement was made at a colourful event held at the General Assembly at the United Nations (UN) to coincide with the first day of the 61st edition of the Commission of the Status of Women. The Equal Pay Platform of Champions, is a diverse group of advocates to amplify and galvanise mobilisation—as part of a broader International Labour Organisation (ILO)-UN Women Global Equal Pay Coalition—calling for equal pay for work of equal value. The event at the UN was hosted by UN Women in partnership with ILO, and co-sponsored by the Missions of Iceland, South Africa and Switzerland. The Alliance secretariat which is being represented here at CSW 61 by Advocacy Coordinator, Lucia Makamure congratulated the Chair for flying the Southern Africa Region flag high. She said, “As the SADC Alliance we are very proud of our Chair and wish her the best in her new role.”The formation of the platform comes at a time when strong calls are being made to accelerate progress of closing the gender pay gap which currently is at 23 percent. In some countries the gap is even higher.
