Changing the Map of Africa through an intergenerational dialogue
The webinar, organized by Gender Links Academy and the Beijing Plus 13 Movement, focused on the campaign to correct the distorted representation of Africa's size on world maps, particularly the Mercator projection. Dr. Naledi Pandor recounted the legacy of Dr. Frene Ginwala, who initiated a project in 2002 to challenge Eurocentric narratives using historical maps of Africa. Abimbola Ogundairo from Nigeria detailed the seven-step strategy that led to the UN adopting a resolution, championed by Togo, to encourage the use of more accurate maps like the Equal Earth projection.
