Zimbabwe: Rising above -a sanyati woman’s triumph over adversity

Tendai, a mother of two from rural Sanyati, grew up in a community marked by poverty, limited opportunities, and deep-rooted gender inequalities. Like many women in marginalized rural areas of Zimbabwe, she faced daily struggles: food insecurity, lack of access to basic services, and very few economic pathways to support her family. Early marriage, gender based violence, and limited schooling were common among girls in her community and Tendai nearly became another statistic.
Yet beneath the hardship, she carried determination, resilience and a quiet belief that life could be different. She joined a local community group where she found a sense of belonging, support, and the courage to dream again. Her life changed when she became part of a local NGO’s initiative targeting poverty, unemployment, and the exclusion of rural women from economic opportunities. The project aimed to empower women and youth with vocational training, entrepreneurship skills, access to finance, and pathways to sustainable income generation.
For Tendai, it was an opportunity to reclaim her dignity, rewrite her future, and break generational cycles of poverty. The transformation in Tendai’s life has been profound. As she gained new skills, confidence, and practical tools through the project, Tendai started her own small business making traditional Zimbabwean crafts baskets, pottery, and home décor items. What started as a modest attempt to make ends meet grew into a thriving enterprise that now supports her family and employs other women in her community.
For the first time in years, Tendai had economic independence. She could buy food, pay school fees, and ensure her children attended classes consistently. Her family gained access to better healthcare, nutrition, and stability. Her confidence grew, and her voice became stronger. She created jobs for at least five women, each earning a stable monthly income. Families in the village now enjoy improved food security and better livelihoods. Tendai became a role model inspiring women who once believed they were destined for poverty. She demonstrated that women can run successful businesses, challenge harmful norms, and shape their own futures.
Her story encouraged other community members to support local women-led initiatives. Younger women now attend trainings, form savings groups, and start their own projects. Her children now attend school regularly, have improved nutrition, and access healthcare changing their life trajectory. Tendai’s journey shows how empowering one woman can uplift a household, strengthen a community, and inspire generational change. The shift in Tendai’s life was not accidental it came through structured support, training, and strategic investment in women. Before the project, Tendai had little confidence, no financial resources, and no platform to express her skills. After participation, she became an empowered entrepreneur with a sustainable income and the influence to advocate for other women.
