South Africa:Empowerment Through the Narrative

A Journey of Courage and Change

“I’ve developed confidence as a woman to speak out because I’ve come to realise that despite being a woman, what I have to say matters. I can and I will speak my truth!”

These words capture the essence of Farnaaz Hamid’s journey—a story of resilience, empowerment, and transformation. Based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, Farnaaz is a volunteer support group facilitator with the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG). Her work is deeply rooted in breaking the silence around mental health and creating safe spaces for dialogue and healing.

The Beginning: A Call to Action

Farnaaz’s relationship with SADAG began in 2019 when she attended a support group leader workshop. Driven by a desire to help others struggling with depression and anxiety, she envisioned starting her own support group. This initial step marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to mental health advocacy.

In 2021, Farnaaz discovered the Women’s Voice and Leadership (WVL-SA) initiative—a project that resonated deeply with her values. “I immediately fell in love with the concept,” she recalls. “It provided women with a platform to share their struggles and empower others by sharing their stories. It was a one-of-a-kind project that I needed to get involved in.”

Growth Through Learning

Through her involvement with SADAG and WVL-SA, Farnaaz has experienced profound personal growth. “I’ve become more confident and stronger through working with such amazing people on this project,” she says. Her role as a facilitator for the Dan Pillay Memorial Support Group has allowed her to create awareness and challenge the stigma surrounding mental health in her community.

This journey has not only strengthened her voice but also broadened her cultural awareness and deepened her empathy. “I’ve developed confidence as a woman to speak out because I’ve come to realise that what I have to say matters,” she emphasizes.

Impact on Community

The ripple effect of Farnaaz’s work is evident. Her community is beginning to embrace conversations about mental health—an issue often shrouded in silence and shame. “So many people suffer in silence and are ashamed to reach out,” she explains. “This needs to change. We need to become more open and educated about mental health.”

Through support group meetings, Farnaaz and her team invite mental health professionals to share coping strategies and practical advice. These sessions not only provide knowledge but also foster a sense of belonging and hope among participants.

Challenges and Triumphs

The journey has not been without challenges. Initially, speaking publicly about her own mental health experiences felt overwhelming. “Being on the spot and talking about my journey seemed daunting,” she admits. However, the unwavering support from SADAG and fellow participants helped her overcome fear and self-doubt.

Looking Ahead

Farnaaz’s vision for the future is ambitious yet deeply personal. She plans to complete her Honours degree in Psychology and establish a counselling centre for girls and women in her community. Her dream is to create a safe haven where mental health is prioritized and stigma is dismantled.

Why This Story Matters

Farnaaz’s narrative is a powerful testament to the transformative impact of empowerment initiatives like WVL-SA. It underscores the importance of platforms that amplify women’s voices and foster leadership in spaces where silence has long prevailed.

Her journey reflects the broader themes of gender equality, mental health advocacy, and community-driven change. It is a story of courage—a reminder that when women speak their truth, they not only change their own lives but also ignite hope and progress in the lives of others.
