South Africa: Finding Strength Through Dialogue: A Mother’s Journey

“I am a married woman with three children and granddaughters. My husband is unemployed and rarely speaks about issues at home. For years, I carried a heavy burden on my shoulders. The Vulamehlo Project became my second home — a safe space where I could share my concerns and learn how to deal with my challenges.”
These words reflect the transformative journey of a mother who turned pain into empowerment through the Women’s Voice and Leadership-SA (WVL-SA) programme implemented by Justice and Women (JAW).
Breaking the Silence
Before joining Vulamehlo, life was overwhelming. Her husband’s silence and the stress of family issues left her feeling isolated. The hardest moment came when two of her daughters fell pregnant at an early age. “I was frustrated because they were part of the Personal Growth group where they learned about contraception and safe sex,” she recalls.
Despite her disappointment, she chose to engage rather than withdraw. “When Vulamehlo introduced the project, I decided to join. The way they explained it gave me hope.”
A Safe Space for Healing
The workshops became a turning point. “I trusted the space. I started sharing my concerns openly and felt lifted,” she says. Equipped with new communication skills, she returned home and sat down with her daughters. “I explained how I felt about their future and the importance of safer sex to protect themselves from diseases. I emphasized taking responsibility for their children, but assured them of my support.”
This conversation marked a shift from silence to dialogue — a skill she now uses in her marriage and family life.
Empowerment Through Knowledge
Through Vulamehlo, she learned that open communication can prevent conflict and strengthen relationships. “I used to feel powerless, but now I can talk to my husband and resolve issues without fighting,” she says.
Her story highlights the ripple effect of empowerment. By addressing sensitive topics like early pregnancy and reproductive health, she is breaking cycles of silence and creating a culture of openness in her family.
The Role of WVL-SA and JAW
The change in her life is deeply linked to the support from Justice and Women (JAW) through the WVL-SA grant. The project provided tools for personal growth, gender awareness, and family dialogue. “It helped me deal with stress and gave me confidence to face challenges,” she says.
Looking Ahead
She plans to continue supporting her daughters and granddaughters, ensuring they make informed choices about their health and future. Her journey demonstrates how safe spaces and knowledge can transform lives and strengthen families.
Closing Reflection
This mother is a true Driver of Change. Her courage to speak out and embrace learning has turned pain into power, proving that when women are supported, they become pillars of resilience and hope in their communities.
