South Africa: Empowering Through Online Support: A Journey with SADAG KZN

A Journey Begins

In April this year, a new chapter began—a chapter rooted in compassion and the desire to make a difference. It was then that I joined SADAG KZN to help plan an online support group for anxiety. The idea was simple yet powerful: eight sessions, one per month, designed to provide tools and strategies for managing anxiety in a safe, accessible space.

The Nature of My Work

As a volunteer, my role is to facilitate one online session each month. These sessions focus on practical techniques to manage anxiety—breathing exercises, grounding strategies, and coping mechanisms that participants can apply in their daily lives. For many, these sessions are a lifeline, offering guidance and reassurance in moments of uncertainty.

The Fulfillment of Giving Back

There have been no negative experiences on this journey—only growth and gratitude. Being able to reach more people and empower them with skills to manage their anxiety is deeply fulfilling. Each session reminds me why this work matters: because mental health support should never be a privilege, but a right.

Lessons Learned

Working with SADAG has taught me patience. In an organization with multiple layers and processes, things sometimes take time. This experience has strengthened my ability to adapt, wait, and trust the process. It has also deepened my understanding of collaboration and the importance of persistence in community-based work.

Impact Beyond the Screen

The changes I’ve experienced are not just professional—they are personal. Helping others navigate anxiety has reinforced my own resilience and empathy. It has shaped the way I relate to those around me, reminding me that kindness and listening are powerful tools for healing.

Challenges and Triumphs

While my journey has been largely positive, it has not been without challenges. Coordinating schedules and ensuring consistent participation can be demanding. Yet, these obstacles have been overcome through clear communication and a shared commitment to the cause. Every challenge has been an opportunity to learn and grow.

Looking Ahead

My future plans are simple yet significant: to continue providing online support in collaboration with SADAG. Mental health advocacy is not a short-term project—it is a lifelong mission. I hope to expand these sessions and reach even more individuals who need guidance and support.

A Privilege and a Purpose

As I reflect on this journey, one thought stands out: it has been a privilege to give back. Empowering others with skills they might not otherwise have access to is a responsibility I carry with pride. In a world where mental health is often overlooked, these small steps create ripples of change.

Why This Story Matters

This narrative is more than a personal account—it is a testament to the power of volunteerism and community-driven initiatives. It highlights the critical role of organizations like SADAG and WVL-SA in creating spaces where mental health is prioritized and stigma is dismantled. Through collaboration and compassion, we can build a society where support is accessible to all.
