South Africa: Coming Out of My Shell and Taking the Lead

When Dineo Tsoabi first joined the 1in9 Campaign’s programmes two years ago, she was reserved and hesitant to speak in public. Today, she is a confident leader, a driver of change in her community, and a passionate advocate for women’s rights and environmental justice. Her journey is a powerful testament to the transformative impact of feminist political education and collective activism.

Dineo recalls her early days in the programme:

“I was very shy and sensitive, always hiding behind others. But through the sessions, I learnt that I am my own person. I don’t need to depend on other people’s wings.”

From attending workshops and protests to participating in art-as-advocacy sessions, Dineo embraced every opportunity to learn and grow. Initially quiet in plenary discussions, she now leads group presentations and facilitates community workshops. Her confidence has soared, and with it, her sense of purpose.

“I have gained from the self-defence class because now I no longer panic whenever I need to go somewhere. I make sure I don’t put myself in compromising situations. I am emotionally and physically stable thanks to 1in9. My life is different. I see progress, a good future, and hope going forward.”

Breaking Barriers and Building Leadership

Dineo’s transformation is not just personal—it is deeply political. Through feminist political education (Pol Ed), she has learnt about gender-based violence (GBV), LGBTQI+ rights, and the power of collective organising. She now understands that leadership begins within.

“If I cannot stand up for myself, no one else will. I need to be a leader from within first.”

Her organisation, Serapeng sa Basadi/Ditlhare, works with women farmers, promoting food security, indigenous plant knowledge, and eco-feminist principles. They challenge climate change and advocate for sustainable practices, pushing government and corporations to make environmentally conscious decisions. This work is vital in Waterdal, a peri-urban community under the troubled Emfuleni municipality, which collapsed in 2021 due to corruption and mismanagement.

Despite limited resources, Dineo and her team have sourced funds for skills training and workshops, empowering women to create collectives and demand accountability. Women in her community are now asking questions, seeking knowledge, and standing up for their rights. This ripple effect is one of the campaign’s proudest achievements.

Art, Activism, and Advocacy

Art has been another tool of liberation for Dineo. Through creative sessions, she learnt to design powerful posters and banners, using visual storytelling to amplify feminist messages. These skills have strengthened her activism and given her new ways to engage her community.

“1in9 has helped me know who I really am—my strengths, my ability to stretch beyond my comfort zone. I am now confident and can bravely face my fears.”

Her activism extends beyond workshops. Dineo has built relationships with local councillors and community leaders, ensuring that her work has institutional support. This trust means that Serapeng sa Basadi/Ditlhare can introduce new initiatives without resistance, fostering collaboration for lasting change.

Challenges and Aspirations

Funding remains a major hurdle. The organisation has innovative plans for renewable energy solutions using natural products, but without formal structures, securing financial support is difficult. Yet, Dineo remains undeterred. Her vision is clear:

“My future plans are to increase my knowledge, be a successful woman and businesswoman, assist more people, and sustain the community. I want to be a good parent to my children and see Serapeng reach its goals, still working in partnership with 1in9.”

The Power of Feminist Education

For Dineo, feminist political education is not just a programme—it is a revolution.

“It is a powerful, good, and fruitful tool that all South Africans and the world should be exposed to. The words used to describe feminist political education do not even come close to expressing how important it is and the changes it brings.”

Her story embodies the essence of Gender Links’ mission: creating spaces for women to learn, lead, and transform their lives and communities. From a shy participant to a confident leader, Dineo’s journey is proof that when women are empowered, entire communities thrive.
