Zimbabwe: Breaking Barriers: Elizabeth Savieri’s Fight for Gender Equality in Mhondoro Ngezi.

Elizabeth Savieri’s journey as a driver of change in Mhondoro Ngezi District began long before she was recognised as a gender champion. Growing up in the Venice mining community, she witnessed gender disparities that shaped her awareness from an early age. Her parents, both educators, instilled in her the values of justice, compassion, and hard work—principles that would later become the foundation of her community leadership.

When Elizabeth married and started her own family, she faced life’s difficulties with determination. The passing of her husband while their children were still young was a profound turning point, yet she refused to give in to despair. She established a shop at Venice Business Centre to provide for her family, and through perseverance, she managed to send her children to school, buy two properties, and develop them. Her achievements became a testament to her belief that women are capable of excelling in all areas of life.

While chairing the women’s league, Elizabeth pursued studies in women’s issues, which deepened her understanding of gender inequality. She attended conferences, joined advocacy platforms, and facilitated workshops where women shared their stories, challenges, and aspirations. These interactions strengthened her resolve to challenge gender norms and uplift the voices of women across Mhondoro Ngezi. Her awareness of the district’s gender gaps sparked a bold advocacy drive that soon inspired other women to assert their rights and participate more confidently in community decisions.

When she became gender champion, Elizabeth led transformative change within the council. She pushed for improved gender management systems and championed the appointment of a gender committee that reflected diversity and inclusivity. She advocated for renaming leadership positions from “Chairman” to “Chairperson,” a symbolic yet powerful step towards dismantling long-standing gender biases. She emphasised the need for gender-sensitive policies and made sure that the allocation of natural resources considered the needs of both men and women.

Elizabeth’s leadership extended beyond policy reform. She mobilised the council to support programmes that addressed gender-based violence, early marriages, women’s empowerment, and girl-child mentorship. She tirelessly championed the development and review of key institutional policies, including the sexual harassment policy and the revised gender policy, ensuring they aligned with progressive standards. Her advocacy for adopting a gender-responsive budget marked a significant milestone, enabling the council to plan and allocate resources through a gender lens.

The impact of her work became visible across the district. Women began participating more actively in decision-making. Community initiatives flourished, and the gender committee’s efforts grew stronger. During the district’s commemorations of the International Day for Rural Women, women proudly showcased their products and innovations, demonstrating their growing economic independence. At various agricultural shows, community members celebrated milestones in empowerment and skills development.

The transformation was reflected clearly in the voices of the people. During a community gathering, Lydia Mushaningi from Ward 3 expressed how empowerment had changed her life, saying, “For years, I felt overlooked, but now I see hope and opportunity instead of despair.” Her words echoed the renewed confidence felt by many women influenced by Elizabeth’s advocacy.

The district’s director of agriculture training, Mr. Dlodlo, highlighted the significance of these efforts during a community event, stating, “Today is an important step forward. Our policies are improving lives and creating better opportunities for women.” His message captured the collective progress that Elizabeth’s work had helped to unlock.

The chairman of Mhondoro Ngezi District Council, E. Chengeta, also affirmed the shift taking place under Elizabeth’s leadership. In one of his remarks, he emphasised confidently, “There is no limit to what women can accomplish.” His statement reflected the district’s growing commitment to elevating women’s voices and recognising their potential.

Beyond policy advancement, visible community initiatives demonstrated real change. Women’s groups engaged in solid waste recycling, nutritional gardens, and entrepreneurial projects. Kushinga Women’s Group established a tree seedling nursery, supporting environmental sustainability. Stakeholders donated sanitary pads to support girls’ education and wellbeing. Study visits to Murehwa RDC strengthened the gender committee’s capacity, while public events encouraged more women to participate and lead.

Elizabeth’s story is one of resilience, vision, and leadership. She has transformed personal hardship into fuel for community empowerment, paving the way for women and girls to thrive. Through her commitment, Mhondoro Ngezi District has not only strengthened its gender structures but has also become a beacon of what is possible when women are given the space, support, and confidence to lead.
