Urbain Municipality of Ankazoabo Sud

The urban municipality of Ankazoabo is located in the region Atsimo andrefana. The municipality covers an area of 158 km2 and has 55,977 inhabitants, 51% of whom are women. Divided into 40 Fokontany (villages), the commune has 31 public primary schools, a general education college, a high school and two basic health centers.

Ankazoabo Sud is an urban commune that belongs to the district of Ankazoabo, a part from the region Atsimo Andrefena. The population of the municipality amounts to 59,746 inhabitants. In addition to livestock farming, rice cultivation and trade are part of the population’s activities. Before the intervention of Gender Links, Gender was considered a concept challenging the local culture. Apart from the initiatives of women’s associations, activities related to gender were almost non-existent at the commune level. Moreover, the communal policy does not did not include any explicit provisions on issues related to women.

Since 2012, the municipality of Ankazoabo south has been chosen as a center of excellence of GL.  She benefited from the project 'Women and local elections', a project initiated by GL and the UNDP in in order to achieve the objectives of the SADC protocol on gender and development. 

Then, the Municipality of Ankazoabo south was able to complete the stages 01 to 10 of the process center of excellence. Among the major activities undertaken, one can mention the development of a gender action plan with mention of the allocated budget. The municipality also carried out some awareness and information sessions on the objectives of the SADC.
