The Ngwenya Town Board serves as the local governing authority for Ngwenya, a small but rapidly developing town located in the northwestern region of Eswatini near the border with South Africa. Best known for its historic iron ore mine and the world-famous Ngwenya Glass Factory, the town holds both cultural and economic significance within the country. The Town Board is responsible for overseeing local administration, urban planning, infrastructure maintenance, and the provision of essential services that support orderly development and improve the living standards of residents.

With a focus on sustainable growth and community empowerment, the Ngwenya Town Board works to balance the town’s industrial heritage with modern urban expansion and environmental conservation. It collaborates with national government institutions, private sector partners, and local stakeholders to implement initiatives that promote tourism, entrepreneurship, and efficient service delivery. Guided by principles of good governance, accountability, and innovation, the Town Board aims to position Ngwenya as a clean, vibrant, and economically active border town that contributes meaningfully to Eswatini’s broader socio-economic development.

Ngwenya was declared a town in 1985 it was a human settlement for mine workers. The town has improved its road infrastructure by resurfacing the roads at Ngwenya Village. The town has only one primary school within the urban area and the nearest high school is situated at Motjane which is about 10 kilometers. The board intends engaging the relevant stakeholders to give the necessary assistance in establishing a high school. There is already a fairly developed sporting infrastructure and recreational centres. There is already a soccer ground which needs upgrading including lighting, drainage systems and fencing and there are also tennis and basketball courts are also used as netball and Volleyball courts which have already been resurfaced and fenced. The town also has a highly active park and town hall. Since the Board has upgraded some of these centres, there is now a fee levy for their usage. This is to ensure maintenance and to keep them in good usable condition. The board also started to impound stray animals around the town. It is encouraging to note that is a major decline on stray animals because the owners now understand that they have to cooperate with the board when their animals are impounded this also helps to protect our tourists as Ngwenya is the main entrance to Swaziland. Our statics shows a decline to the sale of impounded animals on a monthly basis. The Board introduced rates in the 2009/2010 financial year. The board has seen a good response towards the rates obligation to date and will want to keep the momentum. The current structure of the Board still needs to be broadened to improve service delivery. In the long term, the Board anticipates to have fully established departments which will further ease service delivery in the town.
