Introduction

Linecurve pink 2x

Manka is a community‑council area located in the Leribe District of the Kingdom of Lesotho. The area is situated at an elevation of around 1,839 metres above sea level. The terrain and settlement pattern reflect highland Basotho rural living‑settings: scattered villages connected by local roads, agriculture and grazing on mountain slopes, and a community shaped by regional geography and socio‑economic dynamics.

The Manka Community Council is the local government body tasked with governance, development planning and public‑service delivery for the Manka area under Lesotho’s decentralised framework. As part of its commitment to inclusive governance, the council has demonstrated strong participation of women, youth and persons with disabilities: in 2017 it had 53% women councillors; the social‑services committee was chaired by a woman and the deputy chair of the council was also a woman.
