Makoni Rural District Council is implementing the Promoting Gender Inclusive Local Economic Development in Zimbabwe programme  through Horticulture. Makoni’s major focus is on vegetable production for supply in the local and provincial markets.  

Makoni Rural District covers an area of 8200 square kilometres with a total population of 244 000. It is the entry point from Mashonaland East Province to Manicaland Province.  Makoni district benefits economically from mining, agriculture (tobacco and livestock) and tourism. Makoni is the hub local authority for all rural local authorities in Manicaland province where it coordinates all gender mainstreaming activities.

Key Achievements

10% (USD28 502) of the Council budget allocated to Local Economic Development in 2024. 

Council had established Masvosva Green Hub, 39 community gardens targeting special groups, Cattle Business Centre project in Mayo targeting special groups through development partners.  

Council established market places at all Business Centres and Growth Points currently benefiting women (65%), Men (5%), Youths (20%) and Persons with Disabilities (10%).
