Introduction

Mafeteng is one of Lesotho’s principal urban centers, located in the country’s southwestern lowlands near the border with South Africa. As the administrative and commercial hub of the Mafeteng District, the town plays a vital role in regional trade, transportation, and public service delivery. Mafeteng is known for its vibrant marketplaces, diverse businesses, and densely populated neighborhoods that support a wide range of economic activities. Alongside its urban growth, the community maintains strong Basotho cultural traditions, active social networks, and important public institutions that anchor the district’s social and economic life.
The Mafeteng Urban Council, recognized as a Centre of Excellence (COE) under the Gender Links local government programme, is responsible for governing the town and advancing inclusive, gender-responsive development. As a COE council, it works to integrate gender equality into planning, budgeting, service provision, and community engagement. The Council champions initiatives that strengthen economic empowerment, enhance safety and access to essential services, and promote broad participation from women, youth, and marginalized groups. Through its leadership, the Mafeteng Urban Council COE supports sustainable urban development and helps shape a more equitable and dynamic future for the Mafeteng community.
