Gwanda Municipality is the capital of Matabeleland South province which is located 134 kilometers, by road, south-east of the City of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second largest City.

Gwanda Municipality is the commercial and industrial hub of Matabeleland South Province, which is located 134 kilometers, by road, south-east of the City of Bulawayo and 196 kilometers from Beitbridge and Musina (South Africa) boarder post, one of the busiest boarders in Africa. Its economic activities revolve around mining and processing of Gold in numerous mines.  This location lies on the Bulawayo–Beitbridge Road and the Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway. The town of Beitbridge, at Zimbabwe's border with the Republic of South Africa, lies 197 kilometers, further southeast on Highway.

Previously Gwanda anchored the hub and spoke programme for gender mainstreaming in 2020; mentoring Matebeleland South province urban councils but is now a spoke council being mentored by Beitbridge Municipality. Council serves a total 8,375 households with an average household size of 3.2.

Council has a gender policy that guide their operations vis-à-vis gender and service provision.
