Beitbridge Municipality is situated in Matebeleland South province hosting the busiest borders in Southern Africa as it experiences a high level of migration.

Introduction

Beitbridge Municipality is implementing the Promoting Gender Inclusive Local Economic Development Project in Zimbabwe through waste recycling. The initiative being implemented in partnership with Gender Links promotes waste picking and recycling. Beitbridge Municipality collects about 756 tonnes of waste per month, (10% of which is recyclable). Recycling has become a source of livelihood for women and youths in the town. Recycling of waste material like Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), High density polyethylene (HDPE), Aluminium cans, Glass and scrap metal form the core of activities in this intervention. Beitbridge is located at the border between Zimbabwe and South Africa, one of the busiest borders in Southern Africa. This gives the local authority a competitive advantage for waste recycling and management.
The local authority is a centre of excellence in gender mainstreaming, with their core activities aligned to combating climate change. Beitbridge launched a “Go Green, Go Clean” campaign in a bid for a sustainable clean town. The local authority anchors the hub and spoke programme for gender mainstreaming in local government for Matebeleland South province urban local authorities.
