The rural municipality of Alakamisy Itenina is located about 40 km east of Fianarantsoa and is part of the Vohibato District. In 2011, it was designated as a protected area because of its rich biodiversity and natural beauty. The municipality has a population of approximately 18,786 and covers an area of 165 km². It is composed of 13 fokontany (sub-districts). There are 9 primary schools and 2 secondary schools serving the community. The population is steadily growing, and the number of inhabitants continues to increase.

The rural municipality of Alakamisy Itenina has an action plan on gender and combating gender-based violence. Every year, the municipality celebrates International Women's Day on March 8, as well as 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. In 2018, the municipality allocated funds for gender-related initiatives and built a sanitary block adapted for people with disabilities.
