South Africa: Chain Breaker

Growing up in a home marked by domestic abuse and substance abuse, Jackie Co knew pain intimately. Yet, she lacked the knowledge and support to recognize what was happening or to report it. For years, silence and fear defined her reality. Like many women in South Africa, Jackie faced systemic barriers: no safe spaces, no guidance, and no network to lean on.
Her story is not unique but her transformation is extraordinary.
The Turning Point
Jackie’s life began to change the day she attended a 1000 Women Trust event. There, she learned about programs addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and the staggering number of women affected. That moment sparked a decision: she would not only seek healing for herself but also become a voice for others.
Through the 1000 Women Trauma Support Training, Jackie gained tools to identify abuse, respond with empathy, and build networks of support. The training was more than education it was empowerment. It gave her confidence to speak up, advocate, and lead.
“Before the 1000 Women Trauma Support Training, I didn’t know how to support someone in deep emotional pain. Now I understand how to listen without judgment, offer comfort, and refer survivors to the right services.” — Community Health Worker, Khayelitsha
The Change
Jackie is now a GBV ambassador in her community. She has front lined multiple 16 Days of Activism campaigns, educated young women about period poverty, and created safe spaces for survivors to share their stories. Her journey from victim to advocate reflects the power of knowledge and solidarity.
The ripple effect of this training extends beyond Jackie. Women across South Africa community health workers, women with disabilities, and grassroots leaders are using these tools to transform lives.
“I appreciated that the training was inclusive. As a woman with a disability, I often feel invisible in these spaces, but the 1000 Women Trust made sure our voices were heard. I left feeling empowered, equipped, and respected.” — Woman with Disability, Eastern Cape
“The training helped our entire team become more survivors centered. We used to feel helpless when women came to us in distress. Now we listen better, document better, and respond with empathy. It’s been a game-changer for our organization.” — Community-Based Organization Partner, Northern Cape
Evidence of Impact
- Jackie’s leadership in GBV campaigns and menstrual health education.
- Increased confidence among trained women to provide trauma-informed support.
- Community organizations adopt survivor-centered approaches.
- Inclusive training empowering women with disabilities.
Sustainability and Next Steps
The 1000 Women Trust model is designed for multiplication. Each trained woman becomes a chain breaker, supporting others and expanding the network of GBV warriors. As the movement grows, so does its capacity to:
- Establish safe spaces and advice offices.
- Advocate for systemic change.
- Equip communities with tools to fight GBV and restore dignity.
Jackie’s story is a testament to resilience and the transformative power of collective action. From silence to strength, she embodies the mission of 1000 Women: to break chains, build networks, and create a South Africa where women live free from violence.
