City of Gweru in partnership with CARE launched Urban Community Gardens, this was in response to the effects of poverty within the city. The city has its large population that is largely dependent on rain fed agriculture for subsistence and livelihoods. Of late the rains have been erratic, this is mainly due to the effect of climate change, where there has been some changes in rainfall patterns and seasons caused mainly by warmer days and nights. In response to these effects of climate change, Council partnered with CARE and launched 17 gardens city wide. CARE provided fencing material, garden tools and drilled boreholes while Council provided land for the gardens. The open spaces were havens for muggings, rape and other vices perpetrated on women and children. Now that the spaces are cleared and producing food for families, this becomes a very good practice. The pieces of land have increased their aesthetic value because they are well maintained now.
