145 women participated in the Sunrise campaign in Zimbabwe in 2013-2015. Key results included:

  • 92% of beneficiaries grew their business.
  • Average income per month of participants rose from US$51 at the beginning of the project to US$144.
  • 91% of participants said they now experience less or much less Gender Based Violence.
  • Councils provided US$3430 in in-kind support to the project.

In 2017 to 2019, Bulawayo City Council, Chinhoyi Municipality, Chitungwiza Municipality, Chegutu Municipality, Chiredzi Town Council, Goromonzi RDC, Gweru City Council, Manyame RDC, Murehwa RDC; Norton Town Council, Victoria Falls Municipality and Zvimba RDC anchored the programme. Key results included:

  • 150 survivors of GBV in 7 councils in Zimbabwe trained as entrepreneurs in the second phase of the Sunrise Campaign.
  • 100% completed a business plan; 62 % followed through on the plan; 30% partially followed the plan and 8% did not follow the plan at all.
  • The average income increased from $178 per month at baseline to $385 at endline; a 116% increase
  • 72% added new products and 67% found new markets; 66% indicated starting a new business and 20% increased the size of their business; 38% opened a bank account; 18% of sampled beneficiaries hired more staff. The email usage has declined by 3 percentage points to 4%.
  • The Gender Empowerment Index (GEI) which includes entrepreneurial flair, agency, income, relationship control and agency (increased) from  30% to 83%
  • 39% of participants said they now experience less GBV, 59% of participants now experience much less GBV. Only 2% are now experiencing the same violence as before. Overall, the relationship control index (increased) by 4 percentage points to 53%.
  • Gender attitudes as measured by the Gender Progress Score (GPS) in the communities (increased) by 5 percentage points to 60%.
