South Africa: Empowering women and youth to lead GBV prevention and community advocacy

This story highlights how 20 survivors of gender-based violence in Ekurhuleni rebuilt confidence and leadership through a survivor-centred movement-building strategy implemented by Women Leadership Social Empowerment.

Gender‑based violence remains a persistent challenge in South Africa. Women Leadership Social Empowerment (WLSE) implemented a movement‑building strategy supporting 20 survivors through awareness campaigns, counselling, and accredited digital skills training. Before joining, participants faced trauma, low confidence, and limited opportunities. The combination of counselling, GBV education, and computer training helped them rebuild self‑esteem, gain practical skills, and reconnect with their community.

Today, all 20 survivors volunteer at the SAPS Youth Desk, supporting GBV awareness, mentoring peers, and contributing to community safety. Their transformation demonstrates the power of survivor‑led advocacy and highlights a scalable model for strengthening local leadership and collective action against GBV.
